MENTORS: How to Find One, and What to Say!
Post your questions about a mentor for your project. Earth/environmental science educators will read your questions and post comments with suggestions. If you have experience working with mentors, share your thoughts about how to help them help you make your project a success.

I'm really interested in working with a geologist as a mentor for my project - I'd like to do something with the state park near my house. Can anyone suggest a way to find a mentor that could help me?
I would contact the NC Geological Survey for help. They may have someone in your area that can help you out. Check out http://www.geology.enr.state.nc.us/ for more information. The state park rangers can also be very knowledgable about the geology of their parks.
If you are near Winston-Salem, consider contacting Vulcan Materials and the Joseph Andres Gutierrez Earth Science Museum and Education Center. Joe Gutierrez is a now retired Vulcan Chief Geologist. He may be able to help. This center has received many awards.
Also, try the American Institue of Professional Geologists (Carolinas section)
NC Mining Association, Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists ( Carolinas section),
Carolina Geological Society, Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (Carolinas section)
Groundwater Professionals of NC
and finally the
NC Aggregates Association.
These folks contributed specimens for the NC Science Teachers Asso. Prof. development Institute in 2006. I've been using them in my Earth Science classes.
Somebody there knows/is a geologist.
